USEFUL INFORMATION FOR WIRE DRAWING

Assomac in its endevour wants to provide you with helpful information in order to funtion more efficiently.
As a resource for the industry Assomac wants to provide solutions to production problems that various shop floor people might have encountered in the past. You can also e-mail your querries for resolutions.

Trouble shooting
Selection of wire Rod- check for the quality ie for the physical surface defects such as sliver, seam overfill. Such defects in deep drawing would ultimately cause problem, so these should be avoided. The non-metallic segregation is another defet which can create a major problem, hence the wire Rod should be got checked before put to use.

Surface preperation - Whether cleaned chemically or mechanically, the right preperations of the surface is almost important to have smooth drawing operations. The surface of the wire Rod / Wire must be completely clean of all the scale, smut & any residual film to allow subsequently satisfactory coating .

If boraxing has been used for coating as lubricant career, the monitoring of chloride contain in the irath should be done regularly to avoid culting of borax surface. If phosphating is done important is to maintain the ratio of pre-acidity & total acidity in the bath. This plays more significant role in good phosphaling rather then maintaining high pointage/ Strength.

Drawing die geometry & Drafting - The most neglected area in normal practice has been found the incorrect geometry of the drawing dics, which otherwise is considered to be heart of the drawing. In general practice of drawing the high carbon wire the reductrion per pass is kept between 16% to 25%. The drawing angle in the die need tobe kept between 10 degree to 14 degree respectively. The larger angle of the die results into central bursting which is very very common cause of breakages seen in the industry.

A tapered drafting has been found to be very friendly in drawing composed to the uniform or parabolic drafting.
